Sustainability
As a neighborhood grocery store, we see firsthand how much packaging, food waste, and transportation go into keeping shelves stocked. We don't claim to have it all figured out, but we try to make thoughtful choices where we can, and we're upfront about where we still have room to improve.
Reducing food waste
Our produce, bakery, and deli teams manage inventory closely to reduce spoilage, and items nearing the end of their shelf life are frequently discounted rather than discarded. We encourage customers to ask staff about same-day markdowns in the produce and bakery sections.
Sourcing thoughtfully
Where possible, we work with regional suppliers for produce and bakery items, which shortens the distance food travels before it reaches our shelves and supports other local and regional businesses in the process.
Packaging
We're gradually shifting toward paper and recyclable packaging in departments where it makes sense, and we keep reusable shopping bags available for purchase at the register for customers who'd like to cut down on single-use bags.
Community
Day-old bakery items and surplus produce that can no longer be sold are, when possible, made available to local community partners rather than discarded. If you represent a local organization interested in this program, reach out through our Contact page.
An ongoing effort
These are practical steps we take as a single independent store, not a comprehensive sustainability program. We'll keep this page updated as our practices evolve, and we welcome customer suggestions — email us at contact@cedarkart.com.
